Food for thought.......

Roots from
England to
Nutbush.....

Around the late 1700's many people from the Eastern states felt
the Tennessee frontier a new beginning and challenge so they set
out to claim territory. They drove wagons from
North Carolina and West Virginia, via the Cumberland Trail to an area
near the Fork Dear River in West Tennessee.

To  help others identify their claim, they named this small area, Carolina.  It is now located
between Brownsville and Ripley, Tennessee.

One of the families who possessed  political clout were the Haywood's whose  heritage is

Granville, North Carolina; another name for Nutbush.
John Haywood (born 1755-1827)was the State Treasurer of  North Carolina and his first cousin,
John Haywood (born 1762-1826) was later known as the "Father of Tennessee History" because of his
historical contributions to Tennessee.    Members from both families settled near Nashville and
in an area now known  as the Nutbush/Woodlawn community.  They  owned many acres of
land on the highway known today as Tina Turner Highway 19.

Many older residents say, during the Civil War, (1861-1865) Nathan Bedford Forrest identified his
campsite in Durhamville  (a community in Lauderdale County or Ripley called New York at the time)
as Nutbush because of  the beautiful trees full of berries  and nuts before he led the charge on
Fort Pillow in Lauderdale County. So during the Civil War,  the area from Durhamville to Woodlawn
was changed from Carolina and New York to what is now identified as the Nutbush area.

Haywood County
incorporates Brownsville, Nutbush and Stanton.

Many of the area  settlers who came from North Carolina and  Virginia also came from England.
The Haywood's and John Leigh came to America from Lancashire, England  together
via New York and many of the other area settlers came from the village of
Gloucestershire,
England
